Installing a canopy on your 4WD is a significant decision, and with so many brands available, it can quickly become overwhelming. On top of choosing the right canopy, you’ll also need to think about what to store inside and whether any other accessories are necessary for your vehicle. That’s where we come in!
At AUS 4WD Equipment, we proudly support Trojan Canopies for their exceptional quality. However, the tips and insights shared here are applicable to all 4WD canopies.
Internal Fitout
One of the most important decisions you’ll make when outfitting your canopy is how to organize the internal space. Do you want drawers? If so, how many and what kind? Drawer systems can greatly impact the functionality of your canopy, so here are some key things to consider:
- What do you plan to carry in the canopy?
Think about the items you’ll need to store and their sizes. This will help you choose the right storage solutions. - Will any items be too tall to fit with drawers?
Consider the height of the items you’ll store. Drawers can take up valuable height space, which may limit what you can fit inside. -
What will go in the drawers?
Make sure your gear will fit inside the drawers in a way that works for you. Drawers come in various sizes, so choose one that suits your needs. -
How accessible is the canopy for you?
Given that most 4WDs and canopies sit high off the ground, it’s important to think about how easily you’ll be able to access the drawers. If you’re not particularly tall, this could be a crucial factor in your decision. -
Weight considerations
Everything you add to your canopy, including the drawers and gear, adds weight. If weight is a concern, you might want to opt for removable storage boxes rather than fixed drawers, which can be taken out when not needed.
12V System
Do you want a 12V system in your canopy? If so, what do you need it for? A 12V setup can enhance your off-road experience, but it’s important to choose one that meets your needs. Here are some factors to consider:
-
Total Power Storage
The size of your battery directly impacts how much power you can store. If you want more power, you’ll need a larger battery, or potentially a second battery installed in parallel. We recommend getting the largest battery you can afford upfront to avoid costly upgrades down the road. -
Inverter
If you plan to run 240V appliances (like standard household appliances), you’ll need an inverter. This device converts 12V power into 240V power so you can safely use your appliances while on the go. When selecting an inverter, consider the appliances you’ll be running. As a general rule, any appliance that heats up (e.g., a kettle or toaster) will likely require an inverter of at least 2000W. This is a simplified approach, but it can help you make an informed choice.
At AUS 4WD Equipment, we only work with top-quality 12V system brands we trust, including Allspark, Redarc, Energdrive, and Victron. This ensures your setup is nothing short of the best!
Suspension
Any accessory you add to your 4WD will increase the vehicle’s weight, and canopies are no exception. In fact, most canopies can add between 300kg and 500kg to your vehicle’s factory weight. With this additional weight, you’ll likely need to upgrade your suspension to ensure your vehicle handles it safely.
For an even more comprehensive upgrade, consider getting a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade, such as the Tough Dog GVM Upgrades we offer at AUS 4WD Equipment. This will increase your vehicle’s carrying capacity, ensuring it’s better equipped for off-road adventures.
